Monthly Newsletter!
I’ve observed that many teenagers often keep their classroom experiences to themselves and don’t always share their accomplishments. To celebrate our students and their hard work, I’m excited to announce a monthly newsletter! Each edition will highlight our classroom activities, showcase student achievements, and feature their impressive work, along with other important updates. I can’t wait to shine a light on our talented students!
HELP!
It’s that time of year again when students are catching colds and dealing with sniffles. As teachers, we strive to keep our classrooms healthy and comfortable, but we’ve run out of tissues and Clorox wipes. If you happen to have an extra box or two that you could share, it would really help us get through this season. Thank you so much for your support!
Supplies!
Do you have any extra art or crafting supplies at home? If so, we would greatly appreciate any donations for the art room! We’re always in need of scrapbook paper, paint, stamps, coloring supplies, and just about any other art materials. Additionally, if you have any old wall art (framed or on canvas) that you’d like to recycle, we’d be happy to give it a new life in our projects. Feel free to send these items with your student—thank you for your support!
Art competitions Happening!
Scholastics
Start thinking about if you want to enter the scholastics art awards, the deadline is December 12th. This is a great opportunity to have your artwork exhibited and to be recognized at the Detroit Institute of Art. It is open to any age and any medium it just needs to be your original ideas. It costs $10 for individual entries and $30 for portfolio entries, if the fee is a barrier you can apply to have the fees waived. Last year we had 4 students win regional awards and one continued to win a national award and be recognized at Carnegie Hall in NYC. If you have more questions feel free to ask.

This month in Photo 2, we dove deeper into editing techniques, creating fun and spooky Halloween images, including the 'Ghost Around WLC' series. We also explored incorporating video and moving elements into still photography, while focusing on editorial photography to help students learn how to tell compelling stories through their images.

Art and Design
This month in Art and Design, we had the exciting opportunity to explore a variety of new materials and techniques, allowing students to expand their creative toolkit. We began with watercolor painting, where students learned the fundamentals of color theory, different painting techniques, and how to create harmonious color schemes to express their artistic vision.
We then moved into printmaking, a hands-on process that introduced students to linoleum carving and techniques like monoprinting and block printing. Simmilar to the work of Andy Warhol
In addition, students had the chance to work with clay and ceramics, creating relief tiles that showcased their ability to mold and shape three-dimensional art. This project allowed them to explore the tactile nature of clay, learning about various techniques such as slab building, carving, and glazing to bring their designs to life.
Overall, the month provided students with a rich variety of experiences, helping them build technical skills and gain confidence in using a diverse range of materials to express their creativity.

AP Art
In AP Art over the past month, we’ve focused on understanding our sustained investigation and what it entails, helping students refine their plans for exploration for the rest of the semester. They have been dedicated to experimenting, practicing, and revising their work, which has resulted in their first and second project to come out great. To ensure everyone is on track, students have been required to complete progress checks with me. Below are some of their process slides showcasing their journey so far.
