Radiation

Through this body of work titled “Radiation”, I invite the viewer to immerse themselves into my world, where I am navigating the physical and emotional toll of frequent medical visits. This work is a creation of 240 cyanotype images of various CT scans, MRIs and X-Ray scans I have gotten since the start of 2020. Each image serves as a glimpse into my world of recurring doctor visits, evoking a sense of vulnerability and confusion that comes with each test result and appointment.

I printed the images on 4 x 5 in papers to allow for the images to each be a small part of the larger concept which is the body. By transforming medical imagery into ethereal cyanotype prints, an alternative photographic process, I seek to transcend the clinical and transform it into a work of art that not only captures my personal journey, but also resonates with the universal experience of vulnerability and resilience in the face of illness. Cyanotyping adds an element of unpredictability and rawness to the clinical scans, while also adding the blue color of the scans to affect the mood of the piece. By cyanotyping, each picture is unique to itself, letting the imperfections and unknown of the cyanotype process create a new meaning about the uniqueness of each individual and their body.

Some of the images in this body of work are more identifiable such as the feet or brain while some are much more abstract such as the CT scans of the abdomen. By keeping both in the series it allowed me to create an idea of the straightforward illnesses and pathologies that can easily be seen versus the idea of the invisible or abstract illness.
